The Delaware Art Museum is set to host a Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on January 20th, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The event aims to honor Dr. King's legacy of service and community engagement through various activities, performances, and opportunities for collective action.
Ali Shah Watson, Delaware’s representative for the National Leaders of Color Fellowship program and Executive Director of Culture Restoration Project, Inc., will deliver the keynote address. The day will feature performances by the Wilmington Children’s Chorus and a drumline and dance showcase by the Christina Cultural Arts Center. Artist 7God will lead a collaborative art activity encouraging participant involvement in creative processes.
A symbolic time capsule presentation will invite attendees to share their hopes and reflections. Guided tours of the "Jazz Age Illustration" exhibition will provide insights into artistic expression from that era.
In support of community care, DelArt is organizing a non-profit fair and free produce distribution. Donations such as pencils, glue sticks, backpacks, and tissues are being collected for schools in the Brandywine and Red Clay School Districts. Delaware Urban Greens will distribute free produce at the event.
Light refreshments provided by Wawa will be available while supplies last. Admission is free but requires registration.
This initiative is supported by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. Other sponsors include Westside Grows, One Village Alliance, Guerrilla Republick, Wilmington Children’s Chorus, Christina Cultural Arts Center, Wawa, Redclay School District, Brandywine School District, Cultural Restoration Project, Delaware Urban Greens, and The ConnectDE.
The museum has been a key arts institution in Delaware since its founding in 1912 to honor illustrator Howard Pyle. It houses over 12,000 works including British Pre-Raphaelite art collections outside the UK.
