Wilmington’s Public Works Department has compiled the attached list of streets on which construction or, maintenance will occur over the next week by the City itself, or by either DelDOT, Delmarva Power, or private contractors. The attached information is for Monday, July 10 through Friday, July 14, 2023. 

The City’s website contains a real-time map that is updated daily so you can follow any changes to the weekly schedule caused by weather or other construction-related delays. Public Works Commissioner Kelly Williams said every effort is made to compile the most accurate list each week of street projects that could affect your travel in the City the following week. She cautioned, however, that the time frames for the listed projects could be altered if they are delayed due to factors such as the weather. 

Annual Ulster Project Delaware 5K
Motorists are advised that the annual Ulster Project Delaware 5K is scheduled to take place on Thursday, July 13, at 7 p.m. The race begins at Conaty Park, 1591 Gilpin Avenue, and continues along the Brandywine River. Wilmington Police officers will be in the vicinity to direct traffic as needed. This event benefits Ulster Project Delaware (UPD), which was founded in 1976 as a program to build understanding between Northern Irish Catholic and Protestant teenagers. Each July, the project brings a group of teenagers between the ages of 14 and 16, half Catholic, half Protestant, and half girls, half boys, to the Wilmington area where they live with host teenagers and their families for four weeks. During that month, the teens participate in a variety of team building, social, sightseeing, spiritual and service activities that enable them to create enduring friendships and mutual understanding. 

Downtown Farmers Market
The 2023 season of the popular Downtown Farmers Market at Rodney Square continues this and every Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.– rain or shine – through October 25, 2023. Motorists are advised that Market Street between 10th and 11th streets will be closed to vehicle traffic each Wednesday from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. 

Southbridge Intersection Closure

Wilmington’s Department of Public Works reminds motorists that the intersection at A Street and Heald Street will be closed to through traffic for several more days for sewer separation construction related to the Southbridge Wilmington Wetlands Park. (A second closure will follow in mid-July.) 

General vehicular traffic will continue to be directed along a detour route on to 4th Street, Market Street, US-13 or Christina Avenue. Townsend Street has been modified to allow two-way traffic. Local and non-truck traffic can travel A Street via Lobdell Street and Townsend Street traveling Southbound, or from B Street traveling Northbound. Pedestrian access is maintained along the west side sidewalk throughout the closure.

Signage directs motorists along the detour route and flaggers are on-site directing traffic as needed. Motorists should adopt a new travel route plan for the duration of the project. The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) advises motorists in Wilmington that the West Fourth Street Bridge (over the CSX Railroad tracks) will have intermittent single lane closures with flaggers overnight from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. beginning Sunday, July 9 and continuing through Friday, July 14, 2023.

DelDOT encourages motorists to continue to tune into WTMC AM, visit deldot.gov, or download the DelDOT app to keep up with the latest traffic information.

The Delaware Transit Corporation (DTC) operates DART First State, which offers a statewide network of public transportation options including fixed bus routes, intercounty and seasonal buses, paratransit for people with disabilities, commuter train service contracted through SEPTA, and Delaware Commute Solutions’ ride matching program. DART operates 36 bus routes in New Castle County as well as more than 40 weekday trains, eight Saturday and seven Sunday trains on the SEPTA Wilmington/Newark Line. DART advises bus riders that of the following upcoming bus stop closures impacting various routes:

• 10th Street at King Street (ID 57) – Remains closed due to construction until further notice with multiple routes affected.  Riders should board on King Street between 9th and 10th streets.
• 8th and Shipley streets (ID73) – Will be temporarily closed due to construction beginning July 2, 2023, until further notice. Riders should board on 8th Street at King Street.
• Orange Street at 8th Street (ID2) – Will be temporarily closed due to construction until further notice. Riders should board the temporary stop 140 feet to the south, between 7th and 8th streets.

Also, due to SEPTA’s Southwest Connection Improvement Program (SCIP), the Wilmington/Newark Line will operate on an adjusted schedule beginning Monday, July 24, and continuing through Saturday, August 26, 2023. Please visit www.septa.org for schedule details.
