Wilmington's Department of Public Works announced today that, starting on Monday, June 26, 2023, the intersection at A Street and Heald Street will be closed to through traffic for approximately two weeks for sewer separation construction related to the Southbridge Wilmington Wetlands Park. Specifically, the work involves deep installation of elliptical pipe and a manhole.

Two weeks after that, in mid-July, a second closure will be needed at the intersection of A Street and New Castle Avenue. Detour plans associated with the necessary road closures will divert non-local traffic (trucks and through traffic) around the work site but will allow local traffic to detour using local streets. Additional details will be provided in the coming weeks. The City also is coordinating with DelDOT to ensure that multiple road closures will not occur simultaneously.

Starting June 26, general vehicular traffic will be directed along a detour route on to 4th Street, Market Street, US-13 or Christina Avenue. Townsend Street will be modified to allow two-way traffic. Local and non-truck traffic will be able to travel A Street via Lobdell Street and Townsend Street traveling Southbound, or from B Street traveling Northbound. Pedestrian access will be maintained along the west side sidewalk throughout the closure. A graphic of the area affected by this closure is presented as part of this news release.

Signage will direct motorists along the detour route and flaggers will be on-site directing traffic as needed. Motorists should adopt a new travel route plan for the duration of the project. For more information about this and other road closures in Wilmington, please access the new real-time map that is updated daily on the City’s website. Motorists can also tune into WTMC AM, visit deldot.gov, or download the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) app to keep up with the latest traffic information.
