Mayor Mike Purzycki and Public Works Commissioner Kelly Williams invite you to celebrate National Public Works Week 2023 this Monday, May 22, at a “Meet, Greet & Education Day” in front of the Louis L. Redding City/County Building, 800 North French Street. Residents and visitors are invited to stop by the interactive exhibits that will be on display from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and departmental staff will be on hand to engage with the public, provide information, and answer questions.

“I am incredibly proud of the contributions that our public works personnel make each and every day across our City,” said Mayor Purzycki.  “Commissioner Williams and I want residents to understand the importance of public works in their daily lives, and to join with us in recognizing the employees who keep our City clean and running smoothly throughout the year. Put simply, these dedicated professionals make life better for all of us.”

Wilmington’s Department of Public Works joins more than 29,000 Public Works departments in the United States and Canada in celebrating National Public Works Week. The weeklong commemoration is an annual initiative of the American Public Works Association (APWA), a professional organization chartered in 1937 whose mission is to educate the public about the value and necessity of public works projects. This year’s theme is “Connecting the World Through Public Works.”

Wilmington’s Public Works Commissioner Kelly Williams said her dedicated team of Public Works professionals connect us physically through infrastructure and inspire through their dedicated service to the community – from performing regular Public Works duties with pride to being ready at a moment's notice to react as first responders during natural disasters and overcoming trials seen in the field. “Our Public Works professionals help keep communities strong by providing an infrastructure of services in Administrative, Engineering, Operations, Transportation and Water,” said Williams. “They make our communities great places to live and work. So please join us in celebrating all that they do for our City, making it a great place to live and work!”

Commissioner Williams also reminds residents that requests for all Public Works services, such as special pick-ups or recycling bins, can be made by dialing 311 or online at www.wilmingtonde.gov/residents/311.
