The City of Newark will hold its annual municipal election on Tuesday, April 11, 2023. The offices for which an election will be held are the office of Council Member for Districts 1,2 and 4. Members of council serve staggered two-year terms.
Interested residents who wish to run for office must obtain a petition from the City Secretary's Office located at 220 South Main Street. Each nominating petition must be signed by the candidate and must include the signature of 10 qualified voters residing in the district for which the candidate is running. Completed petitions must be filed with the City Secretary by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, February 6 in order to be eligible for candidacy.
In order to run for Council Member in Districts 1, 2 or 4, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Must have resided in the City of Newark for at least one year preceding the election.
- Must be a qualified voter of the City in the Council district you wish to represent.
- Must not have been convicted of a felony for a period of 15 years preceding the election as that crime is designated by the State of Delaware.
Additional information including polling places for each district and absentee ballots will be added to the website as it becomes available.
