Ordinance banning gatherings of more than 10 people passed by Newark City Council

Coronavirus

Newark City Council members have passed an emergency ordinance last week that bans private gatherings of more than 10 people. Additionally, the restrictions will ban all dine-in service at restaurants.

The ordinance comes amid calls from the Centers of Disease Control to practice social distancing in an attempt to combat the threat of the coronavirus. According to the new ordinance, it will be active for up to 60 days.

Councilwoman Jen Wallace told the Newark Post that it is imperative to protect the citizens.

“We have to protect our neighbors, and I see this as one of the best ways we can do that,” Wallace said, adding that she takes the freedom of assembly seriously but believes the measure is necessary to protect health. “I’m not making this decision likely.”

Councilman Chris Hamilton made a statement when the discussion came up in the latest council meeting about citizens gathering to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

“I have heard from many residents, and they are angry and scared,” Hamilton told the Newark Post. “They are wondering why these large gatherings are allowed to continue.”
