Citizens for a Pro-Business Delaware (CPBD) is starting a new campaign against Delaware Gov. John Carney and the state Judicial Nominating Committee after the governor appointed and the Senate confirmed Paul Fioravanti Jr. as vice-chancellor of the Court of Chancery in January.
CPBD says it will spend $450,000 or more on the campaign. The organization said the state’s judges, of which 15 percent of whom are people of color, do not represent the demographics of the state.
Chris Coffey, CPBD Campaign Manager, said the Fioravanti placement is another example of a system which benefits elite interests.
“The confirmation (of Fioravanti) to replace Justice Tamika Montgomery-Reeves – who became the first African American woman to sit on Delaware’s Supreme Court – on the Chancery Court highlighted everything that is wrong with how judges are chosen in this state,” Coffey said.
Opponents of CPBD claim the organization was created by employees of TransPerfect after a court case involving the company.
