CITY OF WILMINGTON: City Government Offices Will Be Closed Wednesday for New Year’s Day Holiday; Recyclables and Trash Collection Schedules Are Unchanged; FREE Holiday Parking Regulations End Jan. 2

City of Wilmington issued the following announcement on Dec. 26.

Wilmington government offices will be closed on Wednesday, January 1, 2020, for the New Year’s Day Holiday. Weather permitting, the Department of Public Works’ Sanitation Division will collect recyclables and trash on a regular schedule next week. Recyclables will be collected on Monday, East of Interstate 95 and on Tuesday, West of I-95, while trash will be collected on Thursday, east of I-95 and on Friday, west of I-95.

Beginning Monday, January 13, the trash and recycling collection days will be reversed! Trash will be collected on Mondays east of Interstate 95 and Tuesdays west of I-95, while recyclables will be collected on Thursdays east of I-95 and Fridays west of the interstate. Wednesdays and Saturdays will remain as back-up collection days as needed for weather and holiday-related collection delays.

The City’s FREE holiday season parking meter policy will remain in effect through Thursday, January 2, 2020. To support holiday shopping from Noon to 6:00 p.m. each weekday, the City will not require payment at parking meters in the Downtown Business District (defined as the area bounded by 2nd Street to 12th Street, and by French Street to Washington Street) and in the Riverfront Business District. Official holidays such as Christmas Day and New Year’s Day remain free all day, as do weekends. Please note that a two-hour parking limit remains in effect.

Exceptions to this temporary parking policy involve streets designated as “tow-away zones,” where no stopping is allowed at those meters at the times posted. All applicable traffic regulations, other than those requiring payment at parking meters, will be enforced, including time-limited parking (two-hour or one-hour parking as designated by signage) or overtime parking, bus stops, fire hydrants, double-parking and parking too close to pedestrian crosswalks, etc.
