City of Wilmington issued the following announcement on Dec. 4.

Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki, City Cultural Affairs Director Tina Betz, and Jerry DuPhily of Out & About Magazine invite City residents and citizens around the region to the final 2019 Art Loop Wilmington, which will be held tomorrow, Friday, December 6. The popular FREE art exhibition, now in its 31st year, is a partnership between the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs and Out & About. Two dozen galleries in and around Wilmington will participate in the December Art Loop.

The Carvel State Office Building’s Mezzanine Gallery, located on the second floor of 820 North French Street, is pleased to present “Curiosity and Flux, ” a selection of new work by Shawn Faust, Individual Artist Fellow in Painting. The Delaware Division of the Arts Fellowship Solo Exhibition will kick off with an opening reception from 5–7 p.m. The show will continue through January 14, 2020.

Born in Maryland, Faust grew up in Newark and has lived and worked in Delaware for more than four decades. An avid outdoorsman well known for his equine and animal portraits, Faust easily connects with the natural world that is readily accessible here. “My work is a manifestation of my relationship with nature and the respect and reverence I hold for it,” he says, and he finds that “experiencing nature with all of my senses encourages my perception of otherness.”

The Mezzanine Gallery, open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., regularly presents solo exhibitions of work by local artists during each month’s Art Loop, focusing on a full range of disciplines including painting, photography, sculpture, crafts, folk and media arts.

Other featured establishments in December include The Delaware Contemporary, Colourworks, and Gallery 919 Market.

 

The Delaware Contemporary, at 200 South Madison Street along the Riverfront, presents its Annual Holiday Craft Show & Taste of the Holidays – a festive shopping experience dedicated to contemporary American craft showcasing both emerging and established artists and featuring regional craft vendors as well as $1 craft beer, wine and spirits tastings. Featured opening receptions on Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. include Look to the Land – A Mary Putnam Retrospective; Mind the Gap, featuring work by Chinese women; and Dessert and Coffee by Rick Hidalgo and Richard Remenick, among others. There will also be live music by Ed Dwornik and food trucks Koi on the go and Uncle John’s BBQ.

Colourworks, at 1902 Superfine Lane, will present Impressions: Stones, Scenes, and Celebrations of San Miguel, a collection of photographs by Alan Evantash, MD FACR.  A retired radiologist, Evantash has, since 2008, spent many seasons in San Miguel de Allende, a city known for its beauty, heritage, and cultural scene. “My whole professional career consisted of looking at images and evaluating contrast, shapes and patterns to make a diagnosis,” he says. “I have thoroughly enjoyed using those skills to be able to visualize the same in my photography, especially using color.”

 

After photographing the buildings and people over several years, Evantash discovered the detail in the pavement stones in the Centro region and began a project photographing and digitally enhancing the images. These Ignimbrite stones date to the Oligocene Era, are approximately 30 million years old, and are igneous rocks made up of crystal and rock fragments in a glass-shard groundmass, resulting from volcanic flow. They may be white, grey, pink, beige, brown or black. The stones are all different, varying with the flow patterns of the fragments. This exhibit contains many examples of these pavement stones, or piedras, as well as several stylized images from festivals and buildings.

Gallery 919 Market will present "Paint the Light Fantastic,” an exhibition of fifteen vibrant new paintings by Tracey Landmann.  Tracey’s appreciation for the international landscape comes from travel and observation. Her aptitude for expressing the life inside that is derived from study with Edward Loper, Sr., interaction with the artists surrounding him, and investigation of creativity. 

Patrons are encouraged to take advantage of two shuttles, which leave the parking lot of The Delaware Contemporary, located at 200 South Madison Street, at 5:45 p.m. The shuttles provide round-trip transportation to either Downtown Art Loop venues or locations in Trolley Square and venues north of Downtown and are a convenient way to meet other art lovers. Shuttle drivers will be on-hand at The Contemporary to answer questions and help art enthusiasts navigate the many offerings of Art Loop Wilmington. Reservations are not required.

The Wilmington Art Loop is a self-guided exhibition of visual art displayed at galleries, studios, museums and alternative spaces in and around Wilmington. The FREE event draws local and regional art lovers to the Downtown District and greater Wilmington area on the first Friday of the month except for Independence Day Weekend in July. Many venues offer opportunities to meet the featured artists while patrons enjoy refreshments, and, in some cases, live entertainment is scheduled. Out & About has teamed up with Breakthru Beverage to present complimentary beer, wine or spirit tastings at three Loop venues that rotate each month.

Art Loop Wilmington’s website – a hand-held guide to the Loop that is easily navigable by gallery location, artist or type of venue – is mobile friendly and features the monthly lineup at least two weeks prior to the start of each Art Loop.
