City of Wilmington issued the following announcement on Nov. 21.

Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki today joined with Cultural Affairs Director Tina Betz to invite residents and visitors to enjoy the holidays in Wilmington. In addition to offering wonderful and exciting places to eat, shop and enjoy stage and music performances, Wilmington has FREE holiday family fun in store for everyone.

The Mayor and Cultural Affairs Director extend an invitation for you to enjoy:

  • The annual Jaycees Christmas Parade, which will be held on Small Business Saturday, November 30, beginning at 11 a.m. at 5th and Market Streets. Santa Claus will be in town to greet everyone and receive your holiday wish list;
  • The annual Caroling on the Square and Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony on Tuesday, December 3 beginning at 6 p.m. in HB Dupont Plaza, between Washington and West Streets, and then stay for the Holiday After Party at DE.CO on West 10th Street;
  • A special Holiday Art Loop on Friday, December 6, featuring various forms of artistic expression at scores of venues in the Downtown District and beyond! (http://artloopwilmington.org/)
“This is a special time of year for people of different faiths, cultures and communities,” said Mayor Purzycki. “We are pleased to once again welcome our neighbors and friends from around the city and across the region to downtown Wilmington for a festive and fun time. It is my hope that this holiday season bring us together in a spirit of unity and peace as we reflect on 2019 and look ahead to 2020.”

To support and encourage downtown holiday shopping, metered parking downtown is FREE beginning Friday, November 29 through Thursday, January 2, 2020. From noon until 6:00 p.m. each weekday, the City does not require payment at parking meters in the Downtown Business District (defined as the area bounded by 2nd Street to 12th Street, and by French Street to Washington Street) and in the entire Riverfront Business District. The standard two-hour parking limit will remain in effect, however. Metered spaces will continue to be free on weekends and holidays.
