City of Wilmington issued the following announcement on Oct. 30. 

Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki, City Cultural Affairs Director Tina Betz, and Jerry DuPhily of Out & About Magazine invite City residents and citizens around the region to Art Loop Wilmington on Friday, November 1. The popular FREE art exhibition, now in its 31st year, is a partnership between the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs and Out & About. More than 40 galleries in and around Wilmington will participate in the November Art Loop.

Create your own masterpiece! Whether you’re a beginner or an accomplished artist, be inspired by the minimalist abstract paintings of Seonglan Kim Boyce as you engage your artistic muse to create a unique artwork. A limited number of canvasses and art supplies will be provided to Redding Gallery November Art Loop visitors on a first-come, first-served basis.

November is the closing month for the exhibition of paintings by Delaware Contemporary studio artist Seonglan Kim Boyce. There will be a FREE reception on Friday, November 1 at The Redding Gallery, 800 North French Street, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., and light refreshments will be served thanks to a donation by the Kenny Family Foundation, the non-profit partner of Kenny Family ShopRite stores.

Seonglan Kim Boyce is an artist and educator currently living in Delaware. She teaches painting and drawing at The Art Studios for the New Castle County Community Services in Newport, Delaware, and previously served as an Assistant Professor for the Department of Performing and Visual Arts at Delaware State University in Dover. Kim Boyce holds an MFA in Painting from Virginia Commonwealth University and a BFA in Painting from The School of the Art Institute in Chicago. Her works have been exhibited throughout Delaware and Pennsylvania

The Carvel State Office Building’s Mezzanine Gallery, located on the second floor of 820 North French Street, will present “The Goldberg Variations: 32 Miniatures Based on Bach’s Keyboard Masterpiece,” an exhibition of mixed-media works by Gregg Silvis. Silvis’s work will be on view from November 1 to 27, 2019. The artist will host a FREE opening reception on Friday, November 1, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Silvis, a Newark resident, received a 2019 Fellowship in Sculpture from the Delaware Division of the Arts.

The exhibition is a series of 32 miniatures based on a composition for harpsichord by J.S. Bach, the Goldberg Variations. Silvis created an 8 x 8-inch work for each of the variations using a range of techniques and materials in the panels. The music is represented by typical musical notes along with less traditional looking dots, graphs, and, in Variation #10, symbols that reference the movie The Matrix. The installation provides a three-dimensional view of the printed music, endeavoring to capture the tiered nature of the composition.

Prior to his 30-year career as an academic librarian, Silvis received undergraduate and graduate degrees in music performance and played French horn professionally for a number of years. In the past few years, he began to pursue his long-dormant artistic impulses and retired early to pursue his artistic career full-time. “I realized that this was what I really wanted and needed to do full-time,” Silvis said. “I view it as a return to the right side of my brain.”

The Mezzanine Gallery, open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., regularly presents solo exhibitions of work by local artists during each month’s Art Loop, focusing on a full range of disciplines including painting, photography, sculpture, crafts, folk and media arts.

In addition to the Redding and Mezzanine galleries, other featured establishments in the month of November include the Christina Cultural Arts Center, the Hotel DuPont and the LaFate Gallery.

The Christina Cultural Arts Center, at 705-707 North Market Street, welcomes Victor Bloise, a mixed-media visual artist from Brooklyn, New York, whose work will be on exhibit through December.  Bloise is an alumnus of the School of Visual Arts in New York City. The artist will host a FREE opening reception and gallery talk on Friday, November 1, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Bryan Cohen, a decorative painter based in Wilmington, Delaware, will be the featured artist at the Hotel DuPont, located at 42 West 11th Street in the City’s Downtown District. Cohen’s expertise includes over twenty years of murals, gilding, faux finishes, and glazing. He has collaborated with many homeowners, interior designers and architects over the years on specialty artistic projects that have brought beauty into residences and commercial spaces

Cohen was guided early on by a beloved art teacher who inspired him to pursue a career in the arts. He is a proud graduate of The Art Institute of Philadelphia, where he learned the commercial side of the art world. More recently, Cohen has worked to fulfill a passion of his by creating his own oil paintings based on inspirational moments that speak to him artistically. Cohen has combined his interest in photography with his talent in oils to create realistic art to share with his community.

Also in November, award-winning folk artist Eunice LaFate will showcase her vibrant acrylic-and-oil paintings on themes of clothes, landscapes, and abstract paintings in an exhibition entitled “Fall Colors” at the LaFate Gallery, 227 North Market Street. The landscapes will feature Jamaica, Wilmington, and the South Western USA, drawing on LaFate's travels in the early 1990s. The exhibition will have background music to reflect LaFate's native Jamaica, as well as her adopted homeland, the United States.

Patrons are encouraged to take advantage of the two shuttles, which leave the parking lot of The Delaware Contemporary, located at 200 South Madison Street, at 5:45 p.m. The shuttles provide round-trip transportation to either Downtown Art Loop venues or locations in Trolley Square and venues north of Downtown and are a convenient way to meet other art lovers. Shuttle drivers will be on-hand at The Contemporary to answer questions and help art enthusiasts navigate the many offerings of Art Loop Wilmington. Reservations are not required.

The Wilmington Art Loop is a self-guided exhibition of visual art displayed at galleries, studios, museums and alternative spaces in and around Wilmington. The FREE event draws local and regional art lovers to the Downtown District and greater Wilmington area on the first Friday of the month except for Independence Day Weekend in July. Many venues offer opportunities to meet the featured artists while patrons enjoy refreshments, and, in some cases, live entertainment is scheduled. Out & About has teamed up with Breakthru Beverage to present complimentary beer, wine or spirit tastings at three Loop venues that rotate each month.

Art Loop Wilmington’s website – a hand-held guide to the Loop that is easily navigable by gallery location, artist or type of venue – is mobile friendly and features the monthly lineup at least two weeks prior to the start of each Art Loop.
