City of Newark issued the following announcement on Oct. 22.
The first seven (7) major phases of DelDOT's road construction and infrastructure improvements on East Main Street are complete, the City of Newark announced today. Both lanes from Library Avenue to Chapel Street are now open and free from construction vehicles and delays. Construction phases on the west end of Main Street, which encompasses North and South College Avenues, are also complete.
Phase 5 - stretching from Chapel Street to Academy Street - is currently under construction. City staff and the DelDOT project team recognize the need for increased parking and are taking advantage of an opportunity to temporarily provide parking adjacent to the current work zone. The nature of the current work will allow for parking in Phase 5 during the University of Delaware Parents and Family Weekend, October 18-20, and Homecoming activities, October 23-27. On-street parking between Chapel and Academy Streets will be available during this phase on the north side of Main Street to accommodate increased parking needs during these events. Parking meters have been reinstalled in Phase 5 to control on-street parking. Several new parking kiosks are also installed along Main Street and pay-by-the-hour accommodations can be made through the Passport Parking app.

Think things are looking a little rough? Don't worry, the last phase of the improvements is a final paving layer over the base layer that remains on completed phases. This will ensure the roadway has a smooth riding surface, allow for positive draining and eliminate any imperfections associated with the initial base paving layer.
Residents, business owners and Main Street patrons are encouraged to stay informed of the project's progress by registering to receive updates and visiting the Main Street Newark Rehabilitation and Pedestrian Improvements project website.
The city is pleased to offer several family-friendly events this season. View the fall event calendar for more information.
