Colton Silverstein recorded a career-high 17 saves, including a crucial stop in the final seconds, as the University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team secured an 8-7 victory over UMass on April 11 at Garber Field. The win marks the third consecutive victory for the Fightin’ Blue Hens, who improved their record to 4-7 overall and 2-2 in Atlantic 10 play. UMass fell to 9-4 overall and 2-3 in conference games.
The close contest was highlighted by strong defensive performances and timely scoring from Delaware. Silverstein’s .708 save percentage played a key role, particularly his game-winning save as time expired. John McCurry led the team with three points on two goals and one assist, while Jack Kolbe and Keegan Lathrop each contributed two goals.
Brendan Powers added one goal and one assist for Delaware, collecting two ground balls. Scott Conte excelled at faceoffs, winning eleven out of sixteen attempts and matching his career high with ten ground balls recovered.
UMass opened scoring in the first quarter before Delaware responded with three goals in the second period to tie it up at halftime. The Blue Hens took control early in the second half through scores from McCurry and Kolbe but faced pressure as UMass tied it midway through the third quarter. Consecutive goals from McCurry, Kolbe, and Bennett Parmer gave Delaware an advantage they maintained despite late challenges from UMass.
Under head coach Ben DeLuca, Delaware has now improved to a record of 47 wins and only three losses when allowing nine or fewer goals. The team also holds a mark of 52 wins against thirteen losses when leading after three quarters during DeLuca’s tenure.
Delaware will next play its final home game of the season at Delaware Stadium against St. Bonaventure on Saturday, April 18 at 1 p.m., with coverage available on ESPN+.
