The University of Delaware softball team secured a 5-4 victory over Florida International University on Saturday at the Delaware Softball Diamond. The win brings the Fightin’ Blue Hens to an even 11-11 overall record and a 2-0 standing in Conference USA play, while the Panthers fall to 18-4 and 0-2 in conference games.
Katie Schievert led Delaware’s offense with her second four-hit game of the season, including delivering the game-winning double. Gracie Jacobs achieved her first multi-hit performance, collecting both a single and an RBI double. Sydney Shaffer drew two walks during the contest, reaching her 94th career walk to set a new program record for most walks in a career.
The game began with two scoreless innings pitched by Karli Challburg. In the third inning, Jacobs got Delaware on the scoreboard with a hit into right field. Schievert followed with a single through the left side before Maddie Diamond reached on a fielder’s choice, giving Delaware a 3-0 lead after two innings.
Florida International responded by scoring twice in both the third and fifth innings to take a temporary lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Gianna Costaro tied it up at four after making a defensive play earlier in the frame. In their final at-bat, Schievert hit her fourth base knock down the left field line to give Delaware its decisive run.
Delaware has now tallied at least ten hits in each of its last four games and nine times this season.
The series between Delaware and FIU will conclude Sunday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for noon; fans can watch live coverage on ESPN+.
