On May 8, 2025, Senator Rochester expressed her sentiments regarding the appointment of Pope Leo XIV, the first American Pope and a graduate of Villanova University. She stated “Joining with all those around the world in celebrating the first American Pope & a Villanova University graduate, Pope Leo XIV. In this historic moment, I welcome the new Pope’s words of humility, community, & peace for all— may his papacy be a global force for good and love.”

Later that day, she criticized a proposed Republican budget plan concerning Medicaid. On May 8th at 22:45 UTC she tweeted “Let Me Be Blunt: the Republican budget is BAD for people on Medicaid. We have to spread the word so we can fight back, together.”

Lisa Blunt Rochester has served in Congress since 2017 after replacing John Carney and continues to reside in Wilmington. Born in Philadelphia in 1962 and educated at Fairleigh Dickinson University with a BA obtained in 1985.
