A late rally by Liberty University helped the Flames secure a 75-69 win over the University of Delaware men’s basketball team on Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center. The result leaves Delaware with a 6-16 overall record and 2-9 in Conference USA play, while Liberty improves to 19-3 overall and remains undefeated in conference games at 11-0.
Justyn Fernandez led Delaware with 21 points, shooting 8-of-12 from the field. He also contributed five rebounds and four assists. Macon Emory added 19 points, making a career-high five three-pointers and collecting five rebounds. Christian Bliss finished with 15 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Tyler Houser also scored in double figures with 14 points.
The first half was closely contested until Liberty took a seven-point lead with just over seven minutes left before halftime. Delaware responded, ending the half with a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Houser to take a narrow 30-29 lead into the break.
Delaware extended its advantage to six points early in the second half, but Liberty answered with an eight-to-two run to tie the game at 53. The Flames then scored six straight points to move ahead by six at the media timeout with just over six minutes remaining. Although Liberty built its lead to nine points late in the game, Delaware closed the gap to two points in the final minute. However, Liberty sealed the victory by converting free throws down the stretch.
Delaware will host Middle Tennessee on Saturday at 1 p.m.
