The University of Delaware softball team defeated Western Kentucky University, 6-3, on April 30 to open the final regular season series. Maddie Diamond tied the program’s freshman home run record with her 15th homer of the season. The victory also marked the senior class’s 135th win, tying a school record for most wins by a senior class.
This game was significant as it not only highlighted individual achievements but also brought Delaware closer to concluding their regular season on a strong note. With this win, Delaware improved its conference record to 16-9 while WKU moved to 18-7.
Diamond contributed with a solo home run and two runs scored. Caylin Blazys added two RBIs and stole a base, while Sorella Gallucci walked twice and scored once. Josie Crossman pitched over four innings allowing just one run on two hits for the win, and Claire Woods secured an eight-out save with two strikeouts.
Delaware took an early lead by scoring three runs in the first inning against Erica Houge, who entered with a Conference USA-leading earned run average. Diamond’s third-inning home run extended their advantage before WKU managed its first score in the fifth inning. Delaware added insurance runs in the sixth following defensive errors by WKU.
With this performance, Diamond matched Sydney Shaffer (2026), Anna Steinmetz (2016), and Mariah Kondravy (2025) for second-most single-season home runs in program history and equaled Steinmetz’s and Kondravy’s freshman records. The team has now won eleven consecutive home games—their longest streak since 2024—and reached twenty home wins for only the second time ever.
Delaware will face WKU again tomorrow evening at Delaware Softball Diamond.
