The University of Delaware women’s tennis team defeated top-seeded and nationally ranked number 73 Louisiana Tech, 4-2, on Apr. 17 to advance to the Conference USA Championship Match. The fourth-seeded Fightin’ Blue Hens improved their season record to 21-4 with the win, while the Bulldogs dropped to 17-4.

This result marks the largest upset in the Conference USA Women’s Tennis Championship over a number one seed since 2010, when Marshall defeated SMU in the semifinals.

Head coach Pablo Montana said, “Today was us at our best. Our doubles set the tone again, fearless and aggressive, and when our backs were against the wall at #2, down match points, we chose courage and heart. In singles, we competed with relentless belief, chasing every ball and fighting on all six courts. This group is peaking at the right time, but we know there’s still unfinished business. We’re grateful for the opportunity and ready to go earn a championship tomorrow.”

Key performances included Amelia Gorman and Navya Vadlamudi rallying from a deficit in number two doubles to clinch that point for Delaware. Vadlamudi also secured a straight-set victory in singles competition that clinched overall victory for her team. Paulina Jurkowska and Gorman each won their singles matches in straight sets as well.

Delaware will next face No. 6 Liberty in Saturday’s championship match at 11 a.m., which will be streamed on ESPN+. The teams previously met in January.
