Delaware women’s basketball defeats Loyola (Md.) for third win of season

The University of Delaware women’s basketball team secured a 67-55 win over Loyola (Md.) on Wednesday afternoon at Reitz Arena in Baltimore. With this result, the Fightin’ Blue Hens move to a 3-2 record for the season, while the Greyhounds fall to 1-7.

Delaware led from early in the game, starting with a 12-2 run and finishing the first quarter ahead 17-12. Loyola briefly took its only lead at 18-17 early in the second quarter before Delaware regained control and held a 32-29 advantage at halftime. The Blue Hens extended their lead throughout the second half, reaching as much as a 15-point margin before closing out the victory.

Ande’a Cherisier was Delaware’s top scorer with a season-high 17 points, shooting four-for-five from the field and converting nine of ten free throws. “It was her 36th-career double digit scoring performance,” according to team statistics.

Trinity Vance added 14 points and two steals, marking her third consecutive game scoring in double figures. Lay Fantroy contributed near double-double numbers with 12 points and nine rebounds, achieving her 41st career double-digit performance. Kailah Correa also reached double digits with 11 points, making all eight of her free throw attempts in the fourth quarter.

Delaware finished the game shooting nearly 47 percent from the field and outrebounded Loyola by six boards. The team has scored first in each of its five games this season.

Ella Wanzer returned to Delaware’s starting lineup after missing four games due to injury and scored six points in her milestone 100th career appearance. Gianna Johnson made her collegiate debut after recovering from injury last season, recording two points and two rebounds in seven minutes played.
