The University of Delaware softball team defeated New Mexico State, 11-2, on April 25, scoring runs in every inning to even the weekend series. The game ended after six innings due to the run rule.
The win is significant as Delaware hit three home runs and recorded multiple runs in three different innings. The team set a new season high with 15 hits and improved its record in April under head coach Jen Steele.
Katie Scheivert reached base five times, going 4-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, a double, and two runs scored. Gianna Costaro went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Bridget Chapman contributed both a home run and a double while Ellie Mulligan added a solo home run. Josie Crossman pitched all six innings for Delaware, allowing just one earned run on six hits.
According to the game summary released by the university, “Delaware put up three runs in the first inning… then Blazys singled in two for the second and third runs.” The report also states that “Chapman hit an inside-the-park home run in the sixth that scored Blazys and gave Delaware an 11-2 lead.” Head coach Jen Steele has now led her team to their eighth win via run rule this season.
Game notes highlight several milestones: Scheivert recorded her third four-hit game of the year; Costaro moved into seventh place on Delaware’s career home-run list; Mulligan hit her fourth career homer; Nankivell notched her thirteenth multi-hit game of the season; Blazys had multiple hits for the first time; Crossman allowed two or fewer runs for five straight games. The Blue Hens have now won their eighth game this season by run rule—the second most in program history—and have become the first team this year to hold New Mexico State to three or fewer runs twice consecutively.
Looking ahead, Delaware will play New Mexico State again tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time as they seek a series victory.
