The University of Delaware baseball team defeated Florida International University by a score of 13-9 at Bob Hannah Stadium on May 3, securing a series sweep. Matthew Minckler led the Blue Hens with five hits, all singles, and one run batted in.
This win improves Delaware’s overall record to 17-31 and their Conference USA record to 5-19. The team has now won four consecutive games and six out of their last eight contests.
Minckler went 5-for-5 at the plate, achieving a new career high for hits in a single game. Other players who contributed multiple hits included Anthony DeCesare, Sam Winsett, Evan Bouldin, and Jeremy Wolf. DeCesare hit a home run and drove in two runs while Bouldin added another home run with four runs batted in.
Starting pitcher Ben Moyzan earned the win after pitching three innings and allowing three runs on four hits. Dylan Bryan secured his first save of the season by pitching the final one and two-thirds innings with two strikeouts.
The Blue Hens built an early lead with strong offensive performances in the first two innings before FIU responded with a three-run home run in the third inning. Delaware extended its advantage with a six-run sixth inning highlighted by Bouldin’s three-run homer and additional contributions from DeCesare and Minckler. Despite FIU scoring six runs late in the game to narrow the gap to 11-9, Harry Carr delivered a key two-run single that helped seal Delaware’s victory.
According to game notes released by the university, this marks Delaware’s first Conference USA series sweep this season. The team will travel next to Huntsville, Texas for a three-game series against Sam Houston from May 6 through May 8.
